Editor: John C Graves   September 13, 2007    Warner Center Toastmasters   guests welcomed
"Investing in Yourself"

Contest season 2007 at WCTM opened with a bang, as a gaggle of topic-worthy challengers lined up to speak their minds at our most recent club meeting. The table topic question posed was "If you could create a charity, what would it be about and whom would it benefit?"

This was a rare opportunity to see several Toastmasters take the same question and run with it. Subsequent contenders were kept in a "soundproof booth", so none of the participants heard any of the preceding answers.

Contestants in the "Tall Tales" speech contest included Glen Rankel with his brilliant "La Cucaracha" speech with the unforgettable hot sauce punchline, Jeff Sarnowski told a fascinating story of a whole town that caught fire, Eleanor Arellano coached us on how to stay fit, and Susan Mayberry took us shopping at the mall with a highly gestural, slapstick speech that strummed a humorous chord.

Susan (who also is President of our club) not only captured Best Table Topics and Best Speaker but went on to a triumphant encore performance in the Area Contest as well, where she took first place in both categories. It is worth noting that last year Susan went all the way to the Hawaii Regionals in this competition.

We invite our regular members as well as members of the general public to join us for our next meeting, to be hosted by Toastmaster of the Evening and Area Governor Carolyn Goldman, CTM.  See you there! (Meeting schedule details are in the table below.)

Is Toastmasters the opposite of watching television?

Is it the opposite of listening to your ipod? Could be. Toastmasters is the organization where you get up in front of a group of people and talk about what you want to talk about. If this idea scares you, maybe that's the whole point.

Toastmasters is dedicated to helping you overcome your fear of public speaking, so why fumble around in the dark with your self-image? Think of your Toastmasters club as a communications laboratory, a forum for experimentation, a friendly place where it's OK to make mistakes -- in short, a workshop to polish your personal style.

If  this sounds good to you, then come join us for a light buffet and some great speakers at the Warner Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills. Currently the most popular Toastmasters meeting location in greater Los Angeles, WCTM at the Marriott provides a wide variety of excellent meeting rooms for one of Los Angeles' finest and largest Toastmasters groups.

Warner Center Toastmasters has been enhancing careers and enriching interpersonal communications for our members for twenty-five years. Why leave great speaking skills to politicians and captains of industry? You too can speak like a pro, and we'll show you how.

It all comes together in a clearly defined and well-supported program of speeches and exercises that help you to sharpen your verbal skills, organize your words and gestures, and make you fast on your feet. Lose your fear of speaking in front of a large group, and you'll feel more confident speaking to anybody!

The Warner Marriott is located at 21850 Oxnard Street at the corner of Topanga. From Santa Clarita to Calabasas, Santa Monica to Chatsworth, we have active members from all over the area.

We DO meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month without fail (except Xmas). Meeting begins at 630pm, gavel at 7pm. Meeting concludes approximately 9pm. Guest fee: five dollars.  This site is updated twice a month with forthcoming meeting details, so check back often.  For details, please contact:
