"Mother's Day"

"We hit the first hill and my stomach dropped. I hated every moment of it. Then I did it again." In his speech number 2, Denny Grimmett shared his fear of roller coasters and how he managed to overcome it. Denny's was one of four superlative speeches given at our last meeting, led by Toastmaster of the Evening Dave DeFore, CTM.

Art Hugon educated our group when he talked about how to be a good medical consumer for speech number 2. For his Icebreaker, Bill Anderson shared his story of a show business career that started with acting and continues behind the scenes at one of the country's most prestigious film marketing organizations.

And speech therapist Mary Grover made a thoroughly entertaining presentation about the teaching of the pronunciation of the American "R". "These seventeen muscles are used to shape the American R", Grover said. "I call it Tongue Boot Camp."

Maya DeBus, ATM, in a reference to Pope "Bene-dict", themed her table topics "Good Words" and got terrific results from our group. General Evaluator Rose Lane, DTM, led the evaluation segment, where Loann Carrison, ATMB, captured best evaluator in her review of Mary Grover's speech.

It is difficult to encapsulate the quality of a meeting in a few paragraphs, but thanks to WCTM's outstanding membership, April 28 was a most memorable one.                  JCG

And now it's time for the...

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear fellow Warner Center Toastmasters,

In the May issue of your Toastmaster’s magazine, there is a good article on page 5 discussing “leadership”.

It discusses the fact that although there is a board of directors for the club, there are many things that you could be doing as well that will shape and mold your own leadership skills while helping other club members.

In essence, it focuses on leading by example. For instance, being willing to fill in on short notice. We all have busy lives and sometimes one of the monitors or speakers is unable to make it. Being willing to fill in at the last minute is the sign of a professional and a leader.

There are many other examples in the article and you probably can think of a few more yourself. See if you can’t employ these leadership skills at our next meeting or any other meeting you may have at work. And then, take note of the results.

I hope that you will take a few minutes to read this month’s Toastmaster’s magazine for other helpful hints and thoughts. Until next time,

Speak out, speak up, speak often!
