"Tropical and Hawaiian"

Speak to Your Success!

Is it hot enough for you?  You bet it is!

But I’m not talking about the scorching days of summer.  I’m talking about the scorching opportunities of the Toastmasters Contest season.

At our next meeting on August 23 we will hold a Tall Tales Contest and a Table Topics Contest.  A Tall Tale is a 3-5 minute speech that uses exaggeration, irony, pun, humor and surprise twists to engage and entertain the audience.

This is the perfect opportunity to stretch your humorous speaking skills to the limit!  As Toastmasters know, a Table Topic is a 1-2 minute opportunity to practice extemporaneous speaking by answering a question, using an open, body and close, in a clear and concise manner.

awards for bestA contest isn’t only about winning – it’s about having the courage to participate.  If not as a speaker then as a functionary – as timer, grammarian, ballot counter, or sergeant-at-arms.  Every speaking opportunity at a Toastmasters meeting is an opportunity to develop your speaking skills.

Our August 9th meeting was oasis of warm island relaxation.  We celebrated vacation paradise in our Hawaiian shirts and leis.  Our Tour Guide, I mean Toastmaster, Loan Carrison kept the meeting heated up with laughter and fun.  First time Table Topics Master, Geza Kalman, challenged us with creative questions. (Just how do you eat a coconut, Geza?)

Congratulations to Eleonor Arellano, Best Table Topic, Jeff Sarnowski, Best Speaker, and Shelly Bright, Best Evaluator.  Honorable mention must be awarded to Freckles, Cate Bramble’s Green-winged macaw. Talk about keeping us in the tropical mood!

frecklesI am pleased to report that for the third meeting in a row – every WCTM member who attended our meeting had the opportunity to speak.  Thank you to our leaders and monitors – you are a perfect example of teamwork in action.

Fellow Toastmasters, WCTM is your opportunity for success!  Make every opportunity count, expand your speaking vision, and when you show up plan to speak up. Be prepared to succeed because we will always …  Speak to Your Success!

Join the heat at our next meeting -

Is Toastmasters the opposite of watching television?

Is it the opposite of listening to your ipod? Could be. Toastmasters is the organization where you get up in front of a group of people and talk about what you want to talk about. If this idea scares you, maybe that's the whole point.

Toastmasters is dedicated to helping you overcome your fear of public speaking, so why fumble around in the dark with your self-image? Think of your Toastmasters club as a communications laboratory, a forum for experimentation, a friendly place where it's OK to make mistakes -- in short, a workshop to polish your personal style.

If  this sounds good to you, then come join us for a light buffet and some great speakers at the Warner Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills. Among  the most prestigious and popular Toastmasters meeting locations in greater Los Angeles, the Marriott provides a wide variety of excellent meeting rooms for one of Los Angeles' finest and largest Toastmasters groups.

Warner Center Toastmasters has been enhancing careers and enriching interpersonal communications for our members for twenty-five years. Why leave great speaking skills to politicians and CEO's? You too can speak like a pro, and we'll show you how.

It all comes together in a clearly defined and well-supported program of speeches and exercises that help you to sharpen your verbal skills, organize your words and gestures, and make you fast on your feet. Lose your fear of speaking in front of a large group, and you'll feel more confident speaking to anybody!

The Warner Marriott is located at 21850 Oxnard Street at the corner of Topanga. From Granada Hills to Calabasas, Santa Monica to Chatsworth, we have active members from all over the area.

We DO meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month without fail (except Xmas). Meeting begins at 630pm, gavel at 7pm. Meeting concludes approximately 9pm. Guest fee: five dollars.  This site is updated twice a month with forthcoming meeting details, so check back often.  For details, please contact:
