Hitting the Ground Running (Recap of WCTM’s January 11th Meeting)

Putting the strains of “Auld Lang Syne” behind them, 25 members of Warner Center Toastmasters’ (WCTM) and ten guests gathered in the Ventura Room at the Marriot for the club’s first meeting of 2007. The theme for the night was Commitments. In that vein, WCTM’s President, Carolyn Goldman, used her opening remarks to stress the need for Club Members to make a commitment to set and achieve both personal and Club goals in 2007. She then turned the program over to the evening’s Toastmaster, John Graves, CTM / CL who got the festivities off to a flying start.  WCTM’s resident quipster did series of verbal riffs that both provided a reminder of the frenetic pace that is the American holiday season and described the relief we all feel when it is over.

Table Topics: What’s Your Commitment?

Returning to the lectern, Carolyn Goldman served as Topics Master for “Table Topics,” the first segment of the evening’s program. Explaining, that the beginning of the year is a time to think about New Year’s resolutions, she tied this idea to WCTM saying, “Commitment to our club is what we need to succeed as Toastmasters.” Carolyn then explored the meaning of “Commitment” with the following WCTM members: Colin Giles, Norm Dornfest, CTM, Maisie Lee, Alan Reveles, Mohnish Sharma, Tess Asiala, CTM, Don West, CTM, Bill Anderson, Zahava Dembowich, and Arnold Arch. The Best Table Topics award went to Colin Giles for his answer to the question, “Do you make a New Year’s resolution each year?”

Prepared Speeches: Smile When You Say that Stranger

The highlight of each WCTM meeting is the “Prepared Speeches” portion of the program. For the11 January gathering, three club members brought to life talks that highlighted both the talent found within WCTM and the diversity of its members. Leading off the segment was Eleonor Arellano with her version of Speech #2 from the Competent Communications Manual (CCM), “A Simple Smile Makes a Lot of Difference.” Flashing a “killer grin”, Eleonor described the many interpersonal pluses from smiling (a good first impression, new friends, attracting the opposite sex) as well as the health benefits that accrue (improved healing, respiration, and blood pressure). “A simple smile makes a lot of difference,” she concluded. “It is the curve that sets everything straight.”

Up next was Glen Rankel with “You’d Better Know Who Your Teenager’s Friends Are,” Speech #9 from the CCM. One of WCTM’s master story tellers, Glen offered the audience a layered tale that recounted a dream he had at the age of 13 which featured a car trip to China Town, a young tough named Jerry McMullen who jerks the aerial from a police car, and a hasty retreat back to Van Nuys without the aforementioned Jerry. Magically compacting space and time the way that only a dream can, our Glen arrives home only to find the previously abandoned Jerry waiting for him. “Rankel! Do you wanna fight??!!” screamed the enraged hooligan.  “With that I woke up…glad it was only a dream,” said Glen. “But in my bed…I found a broken car antenna!”

The evening’s final speaker, Dan Marzec, ATM-B, offered “Where the Flowers Grow”, an Advanced Talk from The Entertaining Speaker Manual. Taking his audience back the halcyon days of “psychedelia,” Dan described his life in the sixties as a young man who embraced the counter-culture and the many adventures it offered. One of these was an impromptu hitchhiking trip to Las Vegas where he and a partner were arrested and convicted for being “disorderly people” and promptly escorted out of town. Summing up, Dan observed, “I was a hippie then and… I’m pretty much a hippie now. When I die, I don’t need a headstone. Just bury me beneath where the flowers grow!”

These three great speeches made the voting for the meeting’s Best Speaker award especially difficult for WCTM Members. Rising to the occasion, they voted the award it to Glen Rankel.

Evaluations:  The “Crux” of the Evening

“Evaluations”, the evening’s final segment, was moderated by General Evaluator, Erin O’Neil, CTM. In reference to an earlier remark by the evening’s Trophy Master, Erin observed, “I have to disagree with Sunit, trophies are not the crux of the meeting. It is the evaluations.” Congratulating all on a “good” meeting, Erin went on to call for an improvement in speaker etiquette, “Speakers, please remember that after you complete your speech, you do not have to say 'thank you'. It is the audience who should express their 'thanks' to you.” Individual evaluations were done by Art Hugon (Eleonor Arellano), Shelly Bright (Glen Rankel), and Susan Mayberry, ATM-B / CL (Dan Marzec) who was voted the meeting’s Best Evaluator.
