January 26, 2006      Warner Center Toastmasters     guests welcomed
"Toastmaster's Pride"

Warner Center Toastmasters started the new year in the Ventura 2 room with an influx of fresh guests and returning older members. Welcome back to Marie Umali, Art Hugon, and Lorena Mendelsohn.

"We actually did have a lot of visitors this time around, that was really it. I think we had a lot of new faces and a couple of recently joined members as well. I think that's great seeing all the new faces," remarked Club Secretary Lois Coburn.

Nastaran Motiei, a financial analyst from Iran by way of Boston, delivered a well-prepared Icebreaker and introduced herself to the club with a career- focused story. Area Governor Erin O'Neill gave a penetrating, edgy, and remarkable speech #3 about telling the truth and being honest with oneself that affected our audience on an emotional level. She has an honest and open style, free of pretense, that is uniquely hers.

And political operative Scott Blough gave us a hands-on look at what it's like to run for political office in his speech number 3 . Scott's speech was a fascinating insider's look at the machinery, the choices, and the sacrifices of public life, and earned him the best speaker award of the evening.

VP of Education Carolyn Goldman wrapped up the evening's slate of speeches with a carefully crafted review of her principles for success.

Soraya Deen, CTM returned as Topicmaster, asking a series of deep-thinking but simple questions appropriate to the new year:

"Jimmy Carter said that he made mistakes as President but never lied," Soraya began. Then she asked charming Vlada Dmytrenko if she had made any mistakes in the last year. Vlada went on humorously to describe how perfectly her closet was organized and how she never makes mistakes. WCTM voted her response as the best of the evening.

In a convergence of constructive criticism, General Evaluator Lois Coburn led a team of top evaluators including veteran members Don West, Joe Austin, and Maisie Lee. John Graves, CTM-CL took top honors when he evaluated Carolyn's speech.

We'd like to thank outgoing Editor of the Toaster's Choice Rita Van Dyke for her journalistic panache and for consistently producing the Toaster's Choice to a high standard. Rita is also an excellent speaker, one of our club's best and most self-assured behind the lectern. Sorry to see you go Rita, and we wish you the best with your busy schedule!

Look for upcoming changes to our site here at WCTM Toaster's Choice, including revamped meeting archives and new speeches in the speech archive. We look forward to seeing you at our next exciting meeting, helmed by Rose Lane, DTM...program schedule follows.                           -JCG

Are you thinking of visiting Warner Center Toastmasters?

Guess what? You're a citizen and you have a right, no, a duty to speak out and express whatever is on your mind. What a great idea! The purpose of Toastmasters is to help you develop your public (and private) speaking skills, improve your self-confidence in business and personal situations, and to help you define yourself to your world more clearly. Why fumble around in the dark with your self-image? You can communicate more effectively than you ever dreamed possible!

If this sounds good to you, then come join us for a light buffet and some great speakers at the Warner Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills. Among the most prestigious and popular Toastmasters meeting locations in greater Los Angeles, the Marriott provides a wide variety of superb meeting rooms for one of Los Angeles' finest Toastmasters organizations.

Warner Center Toastmasters has been enhancing careers and enriching interpersonal communications for our members for more than two decades. Why leave great speaking skills to politicians and CEO's? You too can speak like a pro, and we'll show you how.

It all comes together in a clearly defined and well-supported program of speeches and exercises that help you to sharpen your verbal skills, organize your words and gestures, and make you fast on your feet. Lose your fear of speaking in front of a large group, and you'll feel more relaxed speaking to anyone!

The Warner Marriott is located at 21850 Oxnard Street at the corner of Topanga. From Granada Hills to Calabasas, Santa Monica to Chatsworth, we have active members from all over the area.

We DO meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month without fail (except Xmas). Meeting begins at 630pm, gavel at 7pm. Meeting concludes approximately 9pm. Guest fee: five dollars.  This site is updated twice a month with forthcoming meeting details, so check back often.  For more information, please contact:
